The best family photos do not look styled. They look like you, on a very good day, with the light hitting just right. The right wardrobe is what gets you there.
As a Naples stylist, I help a lot of families get dressed for photoshoots — beach sessions, milestone portraits, holiday cards, and the annual "everyone is in town" moment. The goal is never to look like you tried too hard. It is to look pulled together, comfortable, and like yourselves.
Here is my approach to family photoshoot styling, whether you are working with a photographer in Naples, planning a session on vacation, or simply want your crew to look elevated for an afternoon in front of the camera.
1. Coordinate, Do Not Match
Matching outfits tend to date a photo before it even lands in a frame. Instead, think in terms of a shared palette and complementary textures. If one person is in cream linen, someone else might wear khaki cotton, and a child might wear ivory with a soft terracotta accent. The colors talk to each other without saying the same thing.
Style note: Start with one anchor piece — usually the adult in the most visible role — and build the rest of the family around it.
2. Build Around a Timeless Palette
For Naples and coastal sessions, I always return to the same family of colors: warm ivory, soft terracotta, khaki, camel, faded blue, and sun-washed white. These tones photograph beautifully against sand, stone, greenery, and golden-hour light. They also feel classic enough that the photos will still look good on a wall in ten years.
Style note: Avoid neons, large logos, and overly busy prints. They pull attention away from faces.
3. Prioritize Movement and Comfort
A photoshoot with children is not the time for stiff tailoring or scratchy fabrics. Choose pieces that move well and feel good to wear: cotton poplin, soft linen, silk blends, and lightweight knits. A dress that catches the breeze, trousers with a relaxed drape, or a little one in something they can run around in will always photograph better than something rigid.
Style note: If a child is uncomfortable, it shows. Fit and feel matter more than perfection.
4. Add One Thoughtful Layer or Accessory
The finishing piece is what elevates a family photo from nice to memorable. A woven sun hat, a silk scarf, a leather belt, simple gold jewelry, or a child's leather sandal adds texture and intention. Just keep it minimal — one or two accessories per person is plenty.
Style note: For beach sessions, a wide-brim hat and one delicate gold piece can do all the work.
5. Plan for the Location
A Naples beach session calls for lighter fabrics and bare feet or simple sandals. A downtown Fifth Avenue South backdrop can handle slightly more structure — a tailored trouser, a linen blazer, a midi dress with clean lines. A garden or estate setting loves soft prints, romantic silhouettes, and natural textures.
Wherever you shoot, the wardrobe should feel like it belongs in that place. That is what makes a photo feel effortless rather than forced.
